When to book
What is the best time to book and plan a trip to Europe?
Flights, trains, hotels, rental cars and attraction tickets each have their own best moment to buy. Here is when, from the latest booking data, and the order to do it in.
The short version
There is no single best day to book a whole trip. Train tickets are cheapest when sales open, often months ahead. Flights to Europe from the US were cheapest 48 days or more out in Google Flights data; from the UK, Expedia's 2026 data puts international flights cheapest 15 to 30 days out. Rental cars were cheapest 2 to 4 weeks ahead in KAYAK's data, and hotels in the week of the stay. Timed-entry sights such as the Last Supper in Milan sell months ahead. Book what sells out first, and keep the rest refundable.

Who is this guide for?
Anyone planning a trip to or around Europe who wants to know what to buy first and what can wait. The figures come from booking studies by Google, Expedia and KAYAK, plus official operator and EU pages, checked in October 2026.
When should I book each part of the trip?
Each kind of booking has its own cheapest window, and they barely overlap.
The studies measure averages over millions of searches, so your route can behave differently. Treat the windows as when to start watching prices, not as a guarantee.
When are flights cheapest?
The two biggest studies disagree, mainly because they measure different markets:
- Google Flights (published September 2025, fares from January 2021 to August 2025, trips from the US): the lowest prices to Europe came 48 days or more before departure. Flying Monday to Wednesday was about 13% cheaper than at the weekend, and the day you book made almost no difference.
- Expedia 2026 Air Hacks (UK edition, February 2026): international economy flights were cheapest 15 to 30 days out, on average £372 against £465 for booking 180 days or more ahead. Domestic flights were cheapest 31 to 45 days out. Friday was the cheapest day to fly, about 18% below Saturday.
What they agree on: booking six months or more ahead does not save money on average, and flying on a Saturday or Sunday usually costs more. For a long-haul trip to Europe, start tracking about three months out and buy once fares fall into the usual range. For a short European hop, one to two months out is enough. To watch prices, compare flight fares across airlines.
When should I buy train tickets?
Trains work the other way round from flights. Most operators sell a limited number of cheap advance fares, and the price steps up as they sell out, so the cheapest moment is usually when sales open. As of October 2026, Deutsche Bahn sells up to 12 months ahead within Germany, Eurostar 10 to 11 months, Nightjet up to 360 days, and France's TGV INOUI about 4 months. Our guide to when European train tickets go on sale lists every operator.
Regional trains are the exception: many have fixed prices, so there is nothing to gain from buying early. For long, popular legs, book advance train tickets as soon as your dates are fixed.
When should I book hotels and rental cars?
Hotels. KAYAK's May 2026 data found hotel prices on average lowest in the week of the stay, and higher the earlier you book. January is the cheapest month to stay and June to August the most expensive; Sunday is usually the cheapest night. Waiting is a gamble in peak season or during big events, so book a rate with free cancellation early and check again one to two weeks before.
Rental cars. KAYAK's April 2026 analysis puts the sweet spot at 2 to 4 weeks before the trip, about $10 a day cheaper than booking 6 months or more ahead. For July and August it recommends 2 to 3 months, and longer for vans and large cars. KAYAK's figures are not specific to Europe, and if you can only drive an automatic, book one specifically and early. When you are ready, compare car rental prices and read our guide to what renting a car in Europe really costs.
Which tickets sell out first?
Timed-entry sights with small daily limits sell out long before flights get expensive. The Last Supper in Milan is the classic example: reservation is compulsory, and tickets for September to December 2026 went on sale on 23 June 2026. Check the official site of any must-see sight as soon as you know your dates, and book attraction tickets early if the free-cancellation terms allow it.
What should I do, and when?
- 6 to 12 months ahead: choose dates. If you travel in July or August, or at Christmas, book refundable accommodation now. See where to go in Europe in summer.
- When sales open: buy long-distance and night train tickets, and timed tickets for must-see sights.
- 2 to 3 months ahead: book long-haul flights to Europe, and summer rental cars.
- 1 to 2 months ahead: book short flights within Europe.
- 2 to 4 weeks ahead: book a rental car outside peak season.
- 1 to 2 weeks ahead: check your refundable hotel rates and rebook if prices have fallen.
Book early, book late or buy a package?
| Strategy | Price | Availability | Flexibility | Pros | Cons |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Book early, non-refundable | Cheapest for trains; often not for flights, hotels and cars | Best choice of times and rooms | Low | Certainty; the cheapest train fares | Money lost if plans change |
| Book early with free cancellation | Usually a little more than non-refundable | Good | High until the cancellation deadline | Lets you rebook if prices drop | You must keep checking; deadlines vary |
| Book late | Often cheapest for hotels and cars on average | Poor in peak season and around events | High | No money tied up | Risky for trains, sights and summer travel |
| Package holiday | One price for travel and stay | Depends on the tour operator | Cancel for a fee; free if the price rises more than 8% | EU insolvency protection; no price rises in the last 20 days | Less choice of times and hotels |
Who should pick what: with fixed dates and a train-heavy route, book early. With flexible plans, book refundable and re-check. For a beach week with flight and hotel together, a package gives you the strongest legal protection under the EU Package Travel rules. Whatever you choose, keep the bookings that sell out first at the top of your list.

Frequently asked questions
How far in advance should I book flights to Europe?
From the United States, Google Flights data shows the lowest prices to Europe 48 days or more before departure. From the UK, Expedia's 2026 data puts the cheapest window for international economy flights at 15 to 30 days out. Booking six months or more ahead was the most expensive option in Expedia's data.
Is it cheaper to book hotels last minute?
On average, yes: KAYAK's 2026 data found hotel prices were lowest in the week of the stay. But during peak season or big events the hotel you want may be gone, so a common approach is to book a rate with free cancellation early and check the price again a week or two before.
When should I book a rental car for Europe?
KAYAK's April 2026 analysis puts the sweet spot at 2 to 4 weeks before the trip, and found booking 6 months or more ahead was often the most expensive. For July and August it recommends 2 to 3 months ahead. Its data is not specific to Europe.
Can the price of a package holiday go up after I book?
Only if the contract allows it and the cause is a specific cost such as fuel, and never later than 20 days before departure. Under EU rules, if the increase is more than 8% of the package price, you can cancel without a fee.
When do train tickets in Europe go on sale?
It depends on the operator. As of October 2026, Deutsche Bahn sells up to 12 months ahead within Germany, Eurostar 10 to 11 months, Nightjet up to 360 days and France's TGV INOUI about 4 months. Advance fares are cheapest when sales open.
