How far in advance can you book train tickets in Europe?

Every operator opens sales on its own schedule, from 60 days to almost a year ahead. Here are the windows as of October 2026, and what they mean for your trip.

The short version

It depends on the operator: as of October 2026, Eurostar sells 10 to 11 months ahead, Deutsche Bahn up to 12 months for trips within Germany, Nightjet up to 360 days, and France's TGV INOUI usually about 4 months. Advance fares are cheapest when sales open and tend to rise as trains fill. Book as soon as your dates are fixed and the train is on sale, and note that trips after the mid-December timetable change (13 December 2026) often open later.

Who is this guide for?

Travelers from the US, Canada, Australia and the UK who know roughly when they will be in Europe and want to buy tickets at the right moment: not so early that the train is not on sale yet, and not so late that the cheap fares are gone.

Why do sources disagree about Italy?

A travel-trade help page from Rail Europe, updated 31 March 2026, says Trenitalia extended advance sales for Frecce and Leonardo Express trains from six to nine months on 30 March 2026. An Italian news article about Trenitalia's 2026 pricing still says tickets go on sale up to six months ahead. We could not find the change on Trenitalia's own site. If you are planning more than six months out, check trenitalia.com for your date; if it is not on sale, set a reminder for the six-month mark.

Italian Frecce fares also changed in 2026. According to Italian press coverage, a demand-based pricing system took full effect on 1 January 2026 for Frecce run without public subsidy: prices move with demand and the number of seats left, up to a cap. It does not apply to Intercity or regional trains.

Are train tickets cheaper if you book early?

For high-speed and long-distance trains, generally yes. Most operators sell a limited number of seats at advance fares, and the price steps up as cheaper allocations sell out. When Deutsche Bahn extended its window to 12 months, it pitched the change as a way to book Super Sparpreis and Sparpreis fares "with maximum savings". Flexible fares, which you can change or refund, usually cost the same whenever you buy them.

Regional trains are the exception. Many regional tickets have a fixed price, so there is nothing to gain from booking months ahead.

Why can't I book my train yet?

The usual reason is the annual timetable change. European railways switch timetables in mid-December (13 December 2026 for the 2027 timetable), and trips after that date are often released later than the normal window suggests. Nightjet and Rail Europe both warn about this, Rail Europe also flags the June timetable change, and Eurostar notes that engineering works can shorten its window.

SNCF publishes its opening dates in advance. As of 12 October 2026, it has announced that TGV INOUI trips from 7 January to 2 July 2027 go on sale on 12 November 2026, along with TGV Lyria and TGV INOUI services to Italy and Spain from 1 April to 2 July 2027.

What should I do now?

  1. Write down each leg with its date.
  2. Check the table above for each operator, and note the date each leg goes on sale.
  3. Put a reminder in your calendar for that date. For France, check the "opening of sales" page on SNCF Connect for the exact day.
  4. Book long, popular legs (Eurostar, TGV, Frecce, night trains) first. Leave regional trains until later.
  5. If you are traveling on a pass, book your reservations at the same time, because pass-holder seats can run out first. See our guide to seat reservations on European trains.

Frequently asked questions

How far in advance can I book Eurostar tickets?

Eurostar's help pages say 10 to 11 months ahead for London routes and for trains between France, Belgium, the Netherlands and Germany, as of October 2026. Engineering works can shorten this.

When do SNCF train tickets go on sale?

Normally about 4 months ahead, in blocks on announced dates. As of October 2026, TGV INOUI trips from 7 January to 2 July 2027 go on sale on 12 November 2026.

How far ahead can I book Deutsche Bahn tickets?

Up to 12 months ahead for trips within Germany, a change made for the December 2024 timetable. International DB tickets go on sale up to 6 months ahead.

Is it cheaper to book European trains early?

On high-speed and long-distance trains, usually yes: advance fares are limited and prices rise as they sell out. Many regional trains have fixed fares, so booking early saves nothing.
